If you are looking to expand your business and install more PC's / workstations then if you don't already have a network you are going to need one. Linking your pc's and resources together allows you to share files, printers and other hardware quickly and easily. This can save your business money by sharing resources such as printers and internet connection, save you time by allowing instant access to files on other pc's, securing importnant documents, perfroming automatic data backup, which is now required by many insurance companies.

There are two kinds of networks, pier to pier and domain controlled.

Pier to Pier

A pier to pier netowork is the most simple method of linking pc's together. It is more suited to the home ofice environment rather than a business. It allows you to share files, printers and internet between pc's through a workgroup. Its a simple way of connecting pc's but is not the best method. Security is limited and connection can be a little tempremantal, however it is easy to set up and therefore cheaper to implement. I would not recommend running more than 5 pc's on a pier to pier network as it can cause speed issues and data integrity could be comprimised.

Domain Controlled

A domain controlled network is a lot more sophisticated and needs at leat one server. A domain controlled network is designed for the larger netowrk which requires user authentication and much nore sophisticated security. Users can be managed from a central point and permissions granted / denied to folders and resources. Data can be managed from one location and automatic backups of this data can be performed overnight for security. We use the Microsoft Small Business Server package which provides an excellent platoform for any small to medium sized business. It supports up to 50 users can offer an extensive firewall, world leading SQL Database andMicrosoft Exchange server which manages your company email. MS SBS (Microsoft Small Business Server) also offers remote access so that you can access your pc or email anywhere in the world via the internet.
